Resume reformatting

I worked on my resume today. I reformatted and updated it a month ago and completely changed it today. Either I'm doing a lot or being indecisive.

The "objective" part is incomplete, but... thoughts?

  1. I'll preface with how great it already looks!

    Few tips:
-Make sure your use of color translates well in black & white.

-unless your GPA is within the top 5-10% of your class, I would leave this part out. If an employer asks to see your transcript or GPA - you can provide it to them at that time.

-separate the things under the education heading, not all of them belong there. pronounce your major & minors traditionally. it's easier to read when almost all resumes have the same structure for stating degrees. you could maybe have a subheading for "relevant coursework" listing the rest of those items.

-i know the objective is not finished, but the objective is vague and honestly kind of pointless. everything stated in your objective I would hopefully already assume as a prospective employer. you don't need to tell me you want this PR job - you've done that simply by applying and calling me back about it. Most employers would prefer you show them your interest & desire, rather than telling them in your resume.

-i've seen this layout before (in fact i've used it before) but i don't understand it at all! it's a confused layout. you have some text justified to the right, and although it balances the text across the page well, it doesn't help guide my eye easily. not sure what to say about that...

    -i like your | ER |
it's the first simple thing that pops out on the page, which acts as a great memory cue when I want to dig up your resume again.

    -could probably reword/shorten some phrases
ie. "experienced social media enthusiast: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and blogging." to replace "experienced with and enthusiastic about social media..."

I can send you a sample old one of mine. just DM me (@mshwery) on twitter w/ your email.

  2. Nice. I like it. m.shwery covered pretty much everything. My suggestions/thoughts:

    * GPA - okay. I've heard that anything above 3.5/4.0 is okay to put on a resume. If you're proud of a 3.6 (which is solid) leave it on.

    * Education - I think m.shwery is refering to the actual name of your degree - BS, BA, etc. You do need that.

    * Did you consider putting your twitter account on your resume? They could look it up, see how many followers you have, and BAM instant twitter credibility. Although you'll have to watch what you post...

    * Objective: Get rid of it. And don't worry about putting references on there, either.
